And they ALL lived happily ever after

While I was away we had access to DSTV and so the kids and I caught up and I was reminded exactly why we don’t have it.

One of the shows I have watched before is Sister Wives and I think I saw them on Dr Phil or Oprah.

It fascinates me – I think I have actually blogged about this before but I couldn’t find the post.

The concept of a “village” raising the family appeals to me on so many levels – my friend Tash is great with babies and my other friend Ansie is awesome with practical stuff like having the birds and bees talk and teaching kids about life. So the concept, in theory, can work really well.

But sharing a husband? I am not so sure about that whole idea.

These women appear to be ok with it. They all seem close and comfortable when one announces they are pregnant. It appears to work well. But still – sharing a husband?

My love language is quality time so if David starts spending too much time at work I start getting anxious – imagine if I had to share him with work and 3 other women and their many kids? I know I wouldn’t cope with it at all.

Having 3 kids with talk of a 4th and feeling overwhelmed a lot of the time I know having someone around constantly who gets it and can take part of the load would be amazing – as long as they leave my husband alone :-p

What are your thoughts?

  1. I don’t think that I would be cool with it but I agree, in theory it could work really well ito sharing the load etc. I suspect that I would be the lazy wife – I can just see myself getting into bed with my book or having my wine on the patio while the other wives are cooking and cleaning.
I would LOVE to have 5 husbands though. One can cook, one can clean, one can drive me around etc, etc. I think that THAT would be the way to go.

    1. Julia – they do show the fights and tension etc so it’s not all sunshine and roses but they seem happy with their decision – that’s more what I was trying to get across.

Sharon – I haven’t seen that far back – the one I saw was them deciding on a youth group for the kids and 2 of the wives were very unhappy and did challenge him but did say that they would accept his decision?!

  2. I started watching this sometime ago and caught some re-runs recently, the thing that was most interesting for me was how they all seemed to hide from him, how they were really feeling. In the episodes that I watched, he was in the process of bringing his 4th wife into the family, the other 3 wives were very uncomfortable and unhappy about the situation, but couldn’t say anything about it.
    Share my man??? Hell NO!

  3. Friggin’ bunch of mysogynists in that setup if you ask me… I have serious issues with the whole “honour and obey” bit of some cultures’ marriage vows!

And no, I could not share my husband!

  4. I also watch this show with much fascination. In theory I think this “village” mentality is great. What I find interesting is how they for the most part all just accept how things are. They seem to have a loving relationship with each other and with Kody and their kids all seem loved and cherished. I don’t think anyone can accuse them of not having love in their “household”.

This way of life is DEF not for me though. I would never be able to accept that my husband is sleeping with and having sex with X tonight, Y tomorrow and Z the next day and me the following day. HELL NO!
