I know some of you are started Grade 1 yesterday! It’s a big deal. Life changes considerably for you, as the parent, once your child starts their formal education. Even if your child has always gone to a play school or you have worked since they were a baby, this is always a huge moment, it is a step towards independence.
Cameron started Grade 1 in 2008. I remember standing in the courtyard with all the other parents, torn between leaving them to start their adventure or staying to hold their hold the whole way through it
Now here I stand, in the quad of High School with my teenager who really doesn’t want me to be there or to be dressed like a hazelnut*! It’s hard to imagine the child from grade 1 is the same one starting grade 8 today, he has grown so much – literally and emotionally!
This week is a lot more emotional for me because our next milestone is his 16th birthday, which means he can get his learners licence. His next graduation is his Matric! It is only 5 years away! There was no labelling of his stationery instead there was buying of tablets. There was no oversized uniform, there was instead a search for school shoes in the adult section. There was no walking to classrooms helping him find his name, there was a wave from the car while I watch as he walks away!
How did your first day of school go?
