I prefer is they use a man in one chapter, and a woman in the next, rather than trying to explain in every example that it could be a man or woman. Or woman or man. Yikes!

obviously it does make a difference else they would not gone that far – it is rather ridiculous though.

I do, motly becaue I’ve had to write those infernal he/she/him/her in the same sentence to be politically correct as per editorial guidelines. The thing is, someone would be bound to complain that educational material is sexist/undermines girl children if the publisher didn’t cater for the he/she. So they cover their butts.

Drives me batty that people are so sensitive and that everything must always be so PC all the time.
I must admit that I hardly notice it though..xx
