My oupa used to have an Isuzu bakkie when I was growing up. It was a grey one with “rainbow” stripes along the side. I think it was only two colours but it reminded me of a rainbow. It had no canopy and the first thing my brother and I would do when he visited was jump in the back, sometimes we wouldn’t go anywhere but I think there were times we did go for a quick drive on the back. It was so much fun but it was also pretty dangerous. I don’t think my mom would allow me to let my kids drive on the back of a bakkie now, I don’t even think she would allow my brother and I to do it now. Because when we know better we do better, right?
Well you would assume that would be the case but sadly it isn’t, either people are just ignorant, or we have angels among us who are immortal and can let their kids jump around the back seat of their car while they motor down the highway at 120 km/h.
Over the weekend I was behind a guy in a big bakkie, on the back were two young boys, maybe 7/8. I gave him the benefit of the doubt and thought maybe they were just popping down to the corner shops, they were not. He got onto the N1 highway with these two young boys sitting on the back of his bakkie. Is there anyone reading this post who does not understand why this is dangerous?
Same day, a bit closer to home I see a young child, maybe 4/5 hanging out of the window. Kiara even exclaimed, that is how far the child was hanging out the window. Again, does anyone reading not get why this is dangerous?
Yesterday on my school run, a mom and dad reverse out of a schools parking lot, baby (8 months maybe) happily bouncing on MOMS LAP in the front seat of the car!
A few day ago, mom drives past me with three empty car seats in the last row of her car, 3 toddlers bouncing on the middle row of her bus!
Last week a group of teens leave school in a panel van, you know the ones you load stuff into the back? So there are no windows and no access to the front of the car? There are a bunch of kids sitting in the back who need air so what do they do? One of them holds the sliding car door ajar while they drive on the road, one of Pretoria East’s busiest roads at that (not that it should matter).
WHAT ARE THESE PEOPLE THINKING? Do they think accidents happen to other people? Do they think because their home is a few km away it will ok? Their kids are having fun on the back of the bakkie so why not?
I don’t know, I despair at people more and more. It might seem like a small thing but they really aren’t unless, of course, you are an angel who will come to no harm if you are flung from your car, if that is the case, then as you where!
If you don’t get why these situations are dangerous, please visit #CarseatFullstop or maybe google ‘car accidents’.
