Some of you may have seen it by now but for those who haven’t, it was recently announced that I am the new Mom Face of Whirlpool. We recorded the TV ad, that some of you have seen already over two days in March. It was an experience and a half. When they told me the kids had to be there I was suitably panicked. My kids do not play along when it comes to taking photos. I often look at Cindy’s kids and wish mine did what hers do. Jack and Emma see a camera and they bolt or turn into weirdos. Despite that, we managed to survive and I really had a lot of fun.
The ad was shot over two days, day one was in the studio and day 2 on location in the park. While we had loads of fun, I now understand why actors ask for so much money. It is an exhausting process. When we met for the briefing I told the make up artist my hair was lifeless and terrible to work with. I wasn’t be self critical, I was being honest. It didn’t take her long to realise I was right when she tried to get my hair to do what she wanted. Fortunately she is good at what she does and we managed to get curls that stayed in place, for the most part. The kids loved having their hair and make up done.
Most of you know about my kids and their clothe issues. When I saw the stylist bring in a collection of pretty dresses for Emma, I may have needed to pop a happy pill or four. But fortunately there was some leggings as well which she was happy to wear under the skirt (which, as it turned out, no one actually saw). Jack had a little wobble at the jeans, they were not skinny jeans but again, we managed to
force get them on. The stylist did learn a valuable lesson about toddlers having an opinion and knowing what they want. He also may never suggest anybody wear a head band ever again.
You know when you want your kids to behave but they never do.Then when you need them to shake it up and be cute (like for a TV ad), they never do. We tried for ages to get them to actually make a mess with the eggs and flour. Jack managed to perfectly break about 27 eggs with a knife, no mess anywhere. Eventually the adults were forcing the mess making.
We reached a point in the day where the only way we could get Emma to co-operate was by playing Sesame Street on a laptop that was strategically placed off camera. So many cupcakes were baked, so many eggs cracks and we threw so many sprinkles that I don’t think we will ever bake cupcakes again. I filmed a part on my own after the kids. Let me tell you guys, I am not made for the actor life. I did the same thing over and over AND OVER. I think if we had had to actually speak off a script we would still be filming!!
The kids did have a great time though. The millenials and hipster walking in Braamfontein couldn’t really figure out why these two kids were running up and down Juta street like hooligans. They also may or may not have eaten their body weight in cupcakes, icing and sprinkles.
Day 2 was a lot shorter and we assumed it would be easier because we were in the park. The team came equipped with bubble guns. Well, Emma got bubbles in her eyes and refused to play and then David got stung by a bee. We did manage to get the shots though. It did take a bag of marshmallows and a tub of Woolies sweets but we got it done.
The team we worked with from Space were AMAZING with the kids and so patient. It is always such fun working for people that I don’t normally get to work with. I tend to get stuck in all things parenting so it is nice to work with people who aren’t in that space. What they managed to create was also pretty amazing, I think. The ad is real and captures some great moments.

I also have to give the actual brand a shout out because their Sixth Sense Technology is amazing. The oven you see in the ad is freaking awesome, it can do such cool things! It can do stuff, all on it’s own with literally the click of a button. I also love that you don’t have to wait for the oven to heat up. This makes life so much easier, especially if you are in a hurry.
There were 3 other Faces of Whirlpool which you can see on their Facebook page. I was lucky enough to spend the 2 days we were shooting with Lebo, the chef. She is such a stunning person and was so incredible with the kids. She made sure the bubble guns were there on Sunday!!
Who has a Whirlpool Sixth Sense product? Have you seen us on TV yet?
