{Win} A MONTHS worth of lunchboxes from the Lunch Box Company

Three of my four kids are school going, two of them need lunch boxes, it is the bain of my life. I have tried pretty much every single food item known to man in their lunch boxes and just when we found a solution for Cameron, he started training and we had major blood pressure issues to deal with, so it was back to the drawing board.

It took the better part of last year to find something that works for him but we did eventually but it still requires effort (from me obviously) and it is still a chore I could do without.

When the Lunchbox team asked me if I would like to try out their lunch box subscriptions I literally yelled YES YES YES to my laptop! Really it was like Christmas came early. I was not home when the box arrived and when my kids opened the box, they thought Christmas came early and Jack and Emma each grabbed a packet and ran (literally).Lunchbox|HarassedMom

The little brown packets of magic came numbered Day 1, Day 2 etc which Kiara loves. She has all her friends involved in the process of opening them up and seeing what each day holds. She mentioned she didn’t like one of the cookies, I think it was an oat one but other than that she has eaten every single thing that is in her packet each day. I think it helps that the goodies are different every day, it’s not the same thing but rather a selection of 3 different items and a juice or water each day.

The items are actually pretty much what I was given her anyway – biltong, dried fruit, mini cheddars etc. so I was pretty happy with the items, the only thing I would probably like to see less of is the processed cheese but other than that I am really happy with the stuff in the packets.

These packs do not work for Cameron though, he took out a whole lot of stuff that he doesn’t eat *sigh* but that aside, it is not enough for him and I had to change up the food he would eat to make sure we managed his blood pressure. Even without his training, I am not sure the packs would be enough for an older child and the food you would need to add may not make it economical.

Which brings me to the question I know you are all wanting to ask “How much is it?”. This is the only reason I have avoided things like this because I have assumed it was too expensive but when I sat down and worked it out, it works out cheaper for me to do this for Kiara.

We were buying Kiara a bag of mixed nuts, biltong and a packet of chips for her lunch. The nuts were costing me R284 alone and the biltong around R300 and then the chips were around R40 – so that is R624. A months worth of these lunch boxes is R595 PLUS she gets a juice/water every day and I save time because she just grabs a pack and goes. So I am definitely getting it for her next month. (You don’t even want to know what Cameron’s lunch costs me *sob*)

So whats in the packs? Well it is obviously non-perishables and includes provitas, dried fruit, nuts, some sweet treats like date balls (which Kiara ate), seed bars etc. There is sugar in some of the stuff and while I am a big advocate for less sugar, sometimes it is hard to avoid it, so we control it as best we can.

I have a month’s subscription to the Lunch Box to giveaway to one lucky reader! I promise you, if you have kids at school then you want to win this!

  1. A marmite sandwich was my favourite. I once complained in Gr 1/2 and from then on was told to make my own sandwiches ?

  2. My ultimate favourite lunch box treat when I was in school were my mom’s ham and cheese sarmies and mini cheddars or fruit roll

  3. Sigh I would LOVE this. Charly gets the same lunch every day because we just don’t ahve the time to be creative and mix and match ? #badmomconfessions
You probably won’t love that my Favourite thing to find in my lunchbox was melrose cheese wedges ?
Mandy Lee Miller recently posted…We have a Schnooky Pie winnerMy Profile

  4. My mom was a single parent so whatever she managed to throw together before she left for work I was grateful for which usually was polonium or whatever we had the night before which mainly was vegetarian because we ate red meat on a Saturday and Chicken or Fish on a Sunday. I have 2 out of 4 of my daughters going to school and being ngotho Bipolar and having insomnia lunch is a horrid experience because I am still half asleep..and I have to make 4 lunches because my little ones will insist on me packing them a lunch so they can sit on the verandah if it’s a warm day or in the house and have their lunch which usually is Nutella on bread and a fruit and juice my girls aren’t fussy and I guess they get that from me they are always willing to try different stuff and I’m ok with that as long as it’s within my lunches budget…We don’t do chips ect because we’ll they do chores around the house or help the old ladies in our road and they get a few rands and they have their tuckshop money…If only I had this kind of mentality when I was their age I would have loved to have stood in the tuckshop line as well lols.

  5. I used to put my own lunch in, I loved making cheese and tomato sandwiches or cheese and ham. With a snack and juice. But getting spending money was thee best!

  6. My favorite thing ever to get in my lunchbox was fresh white bread with Ham & Lettuce on. I could really use this prize! It would help with my mornings so much.

  7. My mom and dad were divorced so my mom was basically a single mother, luckily I had my older sister around who would make me lunch and do my hair and get me ready for school. my fav thing that my sister would make would be a peanut butter and jam sandwich, I actually would love to win this for my sisters kids, she is such an awesome mom, she had a lot of practice with me again 🙂

  8. I’ve been eyeing this concept for such a long time…and now with 3 kids, this would really come in soooo handy!

My fave lunch box item would literally be anything as that would mean somebody made lunch for me. lol. I made my own lunch, peanut butter and jam most days. But if somebody was making me a sandwich, fresh bread, butter (not margarine), crisp lettuce, firm sliced tomato (with a dash of salt and pepper) and cheddar cheese…and the tomato has to be between the lettuce and cheese, not touching the bread. lol. YUM!

    Would love to win this!

    1. And totally agree, lunchboxes are awful. I have done pastrami/feta/olive skewers….such a hit today. Tomorrow apparently we don’t eat it. Or it comes home untouched. I buy biltong, cheddars, strawberries, cheese straws, sliced beef…… so much love and effort and when it comes home, nothing eaten, I literally lose my sh1t…..lol

  9. My Mom used to pack in buttered hot cross bund which were a nice and yummy change to the good ol’ sandwich!

  10. My favorite was when my dad would freeze cut up watermelon and grapes, put them in my lunch box so that at break time they were defrosted but so nice, cold and refreshing on a hot summers day.

  11. We always got hot dogs. Or peanut butter. Or cheese. Sometimes cheese and jam (I STILL hate this combo). And always a fruit.
My favourite was always provita with a filling.

  12. I was in hostel, so didn’t really have a lunch-box, however one of the day kids would bring me a Melrose Cheese triangle and Provita occasionally as a treat. A dynamite combo.
(Can’t remember exactly what they were called, but those squeeze cheese things were also a firm favourite).

  13. I saw your post and read “I have a month’s subscription to giveaway!” And I literally screamed “YES YES YES” to my phone!!! Wow!! What a super cool prize that I will love you every day for 21 days for!! My daughter started Grade 1 this year and lunchbox packing has really been one HUGE adjustment for me, especially with a 1 year teething, not sleeping, keeping mommy very busy, cute as a button baby! The last thing I feel like doing once the kids have gone to bed is pack a lunchbox! THIS.WOULD.BE.AMAZING!!

We weren’t so lucky to get yummy treats for school. All my mom used to pack was sandwiches so I guess those were my FAVOURITE! *Sobs and laughs at the same time!*
