I have been involved with various charities over the past 8 years. I started out organising Christmas parties for various children’s homes and then I joined the Santa Shoebox Team. In between that I have done a few different things and helped out where I could. The most recent campaign was the #MothersDayConnect project. This project moved me the most and inspired me to DO MORE. Which is how #WrapABaby was born.
Getting involved in charities is amazing and every little bit of help is appreciated but I have reached a point where I feel like I need to do more. There is always a need for something for someone and it can be overwhelming trying to decide where and how to start. It was with this in mind that I decided to start small.
What is #WrapABaby
I have heard about Kangaroo care but I have never seen it in practice. Visiting the Kangaroo Care Ward at Dr George Mukhari Hospital was such an amazing experience. Hearing the success stories and how well this approach works is what inspired me to start collecting baby wraps. The moms in this ward have wraps but they are not proper wraps. They are made from whatever material they can find or whatever the hospital has. It works. The babies are kept warm and close to their moms. It can work better.
The goal of #WrapABaby
My short term goal is to raise enough funds to provide Dr George Mukhari Hospitals Kangaroo Care Ward with 50 wraps. This will serve the need of the moms in the ward at any given time.
The long term goal is to provide every hospital with a Kangaroo Care ward enough wraps for the number of beds they have.
The dream is to raise enough money or donated wraps to make sure that every mom can take a wrap home with them.
The how of #WrapABaby
I have started crowdfunding to kick this project off. The amount I am aiming for will be enough for 150 baby wraps.
I am putting together a team of ladies from an old age home here in Pretoria who will make the wraps for me.
We are also collecting second hand wraps which we will use to send home with the moms or if we can get enough wraps for a specific hospital we will donate those for them to use.
I am busy finalising the logisitics but I hopefully have a retail store in Pretoria who is keen to act as a drop off point and between myself and the ladies in Gauteng who have offered to help we will collect the rest.
How can you get involved in #WrapABaby
You can donate a small amount to our crowdfunding efforts. If you would like to send money via paypal you can use firstname.lastname@example.org
You can donate a second hand wrap by emailing me email@example.com
You can become a collection point in your area if you are not in Gauteng and I will help you co-ordinate a collection and find a hospital who needs the wraps.
Together I know we can #WrapABaby or two!!!!!
