Kimchi – Everything You Need To Know

Kimchi | Everything You Need to Know | Sustainable Living with HarassedMom

Have you eaten kimchi before? I have been wanting to try it for ages but it is one of those foods that I had formed an opinion of before I had even tried it. During a discussion with friends about fermented foods and gut health, I decided to just give it a try – I mean what is the worst that could happen?

I picked up a bottle from the Refillery and after staring at it for a few days finally tried it. It is a lot nicer than I thought it was going to be. Jack did knock the bottle and the lid popped open and it let out such a bad smell that no one else is willing to even try it but once it was opened it doesn’t smell as bad.

I am currently taking it daily to help heal my gut and improve my energy levels after the festive indulgence but it is something I think I will keep as a regular in my diet.

What is kimchi

“Kimchi is a staple food in Korean cuisine, is a traditional side dish of salted and fermented vegetables, such as napa cabbage and Korean radish, made with a widely varying selection of seasonings, including gochugaru (Korean chili powder), spring onions, garlic, ginger, and jeotgal (salted seafood), etc.[1][2] It is also used in a variety of soups and stews. It is eaten as a side dish with almost every Korean meal.”  Source Wikipedia

Why should you eat kimchi?

It is great for your gut health

Kimchi is a fermented food and as such it is rich in good probiotics. Eating kimchi regularly helps to improve the balance of bacteria in your gut and in doing so aids digestion.

Kimchi could boost your immunity.

If you know anything about gut health, you will know how important gut health is in your overall health and wellness, including your immunity. Immune functions happen in your gut, if your gut is healthy, your immunity will be improved and as mentioned in my first point, kimchi improves your gut health and so could help to boost your immunity..

It can improve your cholesterol and heart health.

Studies have been conducted that found that those people who eat kimchi regularly have lower levels of the bad cholesterol. Kimchi is also made from antioxidants like ginger and red peppers, these foods help to stabilize damaged cells and can protect from chronic conditions like heart disease.

Kimchi may reduce inflammation.

Kimchi is a natural probiotic and probiotics are known to have an anti-inflammatory effect on the gut.Taking kimchi regularly will improve gut health and as a result can help to reduce inflammation.

It can support brain health.

Once again, this benefit starts in the gut. The enteric nervous system is located in your gut and communicates with your brain. Effective communication relies on good gut health. Kimchi keeps your gut healthy which means communication flows and your brain health is boosted.

Kimchi may help with weight loss

Adding kimchi to your diet won’t result in instant weight loss, but again if your gut is healthy, digestion is improved and this may aid weightloss. Kimchi also promotes a healthy lifestyle and if you are trying to loose weight, it is a tasty, low calorie option to add flavour to your meals.

It could help prevent yeast infections.

Yeast infections are always a concern for women, kimchi can help to prevent these infections thanks to the good bacteria in them.

Where can you get kimchi?

I bought my kimchi from the Refillery but you can find it at Faithful to Nature, Dischem and your local Asian market. If you are so inclined you could also make your own – remember because it is a fermented food it is going to take a while to make.

  1. I love kimchi! It’s so delicious especially homemade. It’s a bit of a process but so worth it and it’s really good for your gut health too!

  2. My partner just started making his own Kimchi, and talking all about these sorts of benefits. He has a batch in the kitchen counter (if it’s out, it gets more sour!) and one in the fridge (it is sour enough) but I cannot tell the differences between the flavors much myself. Glad to know they are healthy batches.

  3. I love eating Kimchi it has good gut health properties. I enjoy fermented foods plus good for you.

  4. I absolutely LOVE kimchi! it is delicious and easy to eat and eat to work with. it also has a long period of being ready for you so it’s handy to buy in bulk. generally if you like the taste it is a wonder to have
