David and I have never really been big on Valentines Day. We usually each grab something small on the day or the day before, just for the sake of swapping gifts.
This year though I think I won because I provided a baby – a whole little person 🙂
Seriously though, the day sort of just happened. David did buy me a small little stuffed dog which is very cute and I think is the first toy I have received for a Valentines Day. The best part for me was having him at home. One of my main love languages is quality time so being together was special – even though it was in between school drop offs and pick ups, baby feeds and nappy changes.
I really did have every intention of cooking though, because David had done a lot of driving up and down with the kids, so I wanted dinner ready by the time they got home but Emma had other plans and they got home earlier than I thought and standing up, by that time was sore. So David ended up taking over the cooking as well.
It was rather fitting actually and I think very representative of our relationship – a give and take, sort of like a relay race, handing the baton over when you need a break.
The interwebs were full of pictures of gifts and chocolates and flowers and declarations of love. It was really awesome to see all the love but I never felt like I was missing out on anything. Of course surprise flowers would be lovely but I don’t feel any less loved because I didn’t get any so chances are I wouldn’t feel more loved.
I get the value in Valentines Day and I do love seeing all the pretty pink heart decor and hearing the sweet stories but for me waking up next to David every morning is like Valentines Day every day!
How was your day? Do you and your partner make a big deal of the day? Do you swap gifts?
