Date Night Vibes with Signature

Dinner at Signature Restaurant | HarassedMom

Full disclosure: David and I don’t get date nights as often as we should. It is a combination of things but like self-care, it is one of those things I know we need to prioritize. We both work from home so we are around each all day and so it is easy not to make the time to get out and do something just for the two of us.

We do try sneak in coffee or lunch dates here and there but when we get the opportunity to have dinner at a fancy restaurant we grab it with both hands.

We were recently treated to a dinner at Signature in Brooklyn and what an absolutely incredibly treat it was. Those of you in Joburg will probably recognise the restaurant name, Signature in Morningside has been around for 10 years next year. The Brooklyn store is just over 3 years old and I can’t believe I have never been there before, it is the perfect date night restaurant.

Desmond, the owner of Signature, is an incredibly interesting guy and was one of the original owners of Back of the Moon that was at Gold Reef City. You didn’t go to Gold Reef City and not go to Back of the Moon a few years ago. He is passionate about what he does and takes great pride in creating an unforgettable dining experience for his guests.

The menu is extensive and has some delicious meals on it but what is more impressive is the wine list that is customised and is made up of wines bought twice a year on auctions. This means that the wines are chosen by Desmond and the bottles are limited to what was purchased. If wines are your thing, then you need to add this restaurant to your list and when you visit, chat to Desmond about the selection.

Dinner was, without a doubt, one of the best meals I have experienced.

David and I ordered different dishes so that we were able to experience as much of the menu as possible because everything sounded amazing.

Starters: I went with Salmon Roses (obviously) and David had Asian Beef Fillet. As much as I love salmon roses, Davids dish was so delicious. The flavours were incredibly and I almost wish I had ordered it.

Beef Fillet influenced beef, marinated in an Indonisian chilli and ginger soya, wrapped with seaweed. Served with a combination of purees that include, banana ginger and carrot, shimejie salad and crispy ginger finished with a burst of orange soaked carrot and drizzled with soya sauce.

Mains: David ordered the Sole and I had the Duck Leg Confit. Davids dish was good but I had the winner mains.

Slow braised sous vide style duck leg confit with a potato dauphinoise, honey glazed root vegetables and
topped with fig preserve and port wine jus.

Desserts: I love food but I love desserts the most! David had the Trio of Creme Brulee and I had the Ferror Rocher Tiramisu. Both dishes were out of this world amazing and the perfect way to end the meal.

With chocolate fudge parfait, caramel gel, strawberry salsa, hazelnut crumble and chocolate ganache

Special mention has to go to the curry butter. They bought bread for us at the beginning of the meal, I did not have any but David had some with the curry butter they served with it and he said it was the best thing he had tasted. It is the first time I have had a meal where they have bought out flavoured butter.

This is not a restaurant you go to on a tight budget but if you are looking to celebrate a special event then Signature is worth every single cent. The food is amazing, the setting is flawless, the staff are friendly, efficient and good at what they do.

Basically Desmond and his team get fine dining right and David and I will definitely be back!

This post forms part of my 31 days to achieve work life balance as a work from home mom.
