Late night visits to the ER

Emma got pink eye – well we thought it was pink eye – on Friday afternoon. There isn’t really much you can do for pink eye so I was cleaning her eyes regularly and putting some cream in that I had for pink eye. She wasn’t overly miserable but she also wasn’t overly happy.

We had big plans for Saturday night, it was a good friends 40th but there was no way we could take her out anywhere. Davids mom also had plans so there we were, alienated and under quarantine watching the rugby on our own but it actually was really nice. We had a good afternoon.

Friday night Emma hadn’t really slept (but David had) so he was on Emma duty. At about 9h30 she starts crying and he goes to sort her out, next minute I hear her vomiting so I get up to go help. Basically he picked her up forward facing and was holding her over the sink. I walk in and notice her eyes are bleeding.

Now let me just stop here for a moment – it was not like blood spurting out of her eyes or an uncontrollable flow of blood (THANK GOODNESS), it was sort of like diluted bloody tears. But it was still extremely terrifying.

What happened next was a bit of a blur. I am trying to figure out how to get everyone in the car as quickly as possible but David was almost out the door already. Fortunately Cameron woke up and he ran out with David because there was no car chair in Davids car (I was still figuring logistics out) so he was able to hold Emma.Late Night ER Visits|HarassedMom

Kiara woke up and was obviously upset so her and I sat in the lounge and watched Malcom in the Middle while we waited.

Cameron phoned to ask me what medicine I had given her so obviously I was now convinced I had caused this.

Then I received a phone call from the admin guy at the ER! Now I do understand he was doing his job but this is a quick extract of our conversation.

Him: Oh you are on a hospital plan.

Me: Yes I know, we will pay whatever we need to.

Him: WELL! I must first go and see what they are doing. IF she is stable then its fine, if not then we will have to see!

Me: SEE WHAT? SHE IS BLEEDING OUT HER EYES! WE WILL PAY WHATEVER WE HAVE TO!

Him: Well let me first go and check!Late Night ER Visits|HarassedMom

I was one step away from getting in my car and physically assaulting this man! My child is in the ER, I can’t be there and he is implying we will be kicked out!

ANYWAY back to the point!

The blood stopped when they were in the ER, no need for the Dr to do anything for that. Apparently it was a haemorrhage of sorts but nothing too serious! She got an antibiotic and eye drops and they were home 30 minutes later. Late Night ER Visits|HarassedMom

It was probably the most frightening experience I have had as a parent. I have never seen anything like that before and bleeding eyes are really never a sign of anything good! I lay awake for ages afterwards and actually did go and check she was still breathing a few times!

This morning she is almost back to normal. Her eyes are clear and the huge red circles under them are fading!

Despite the rather cold admin guy, I am very glad that we have access to good health care and we didn’t have to drive for ages or wait in queues!

How was your Saturday night?

So hectic! I would have flipped out! Glad it was relatively harmless and that she is on the mend…

That is hectic! I felt the panic with you just reading this. We had too had such a similar scare and off to the ER. There is no explaining the sheer panic that surges through you. Sorry you had still deal with chop whilst in that emotional storm. So glad she’s better. What caused the haemorage?
