Pick n Pay FAIL!

I am an open and proud Pick n Pay supporter. Their hyper is my favourite place to shop – I can get everything under one roof.

There is always a PnP nearby so its convenient to pop in and get what I need AND now you can use your smart shopper card.

WIN!

Well today they let me down :-/

It’s actually been coming and I have moaned about their lack of items before but by the next day they usually have what I want and it’s really only actually been one or two items. So I look passed it. I have asked on Facebook and Twitter 3 times if I can use my smart shopper card to do online shopping with – I STILL don’t have an answer. I mean its a yes/no question? But again I looked passed it – I wasn’t planning on doing my online shopping this month so really no big deal.

But today when I walked into the fresh produce section of PnP Hyper Faerie Glen and was greeted by EMPTY shelves I nearly gave birth I was so annoyed. I am 36 weeks pregnant with a family that needs to have food regardless of whether I am in hospital, so today was stock cupboard day!

I was specifically looking for this special – it was nowhere to be found. So I figured I would take each item anyway and maybe they were just behind with the promo. Well there was ONE bag of 1kg tomatoes left – it was so squashed the liquid was leaking out of it. There was only 3 bags of onions left (not even sure if they were the special ones) so no special for me – maybe it’s for evening shoppers only?

The vegetable shelves are EMPTY apart from 1kg bags of carrots and a few left over soup mixes (which were on special). So its carrots for my family for the next two weeks.

I head over to the meat to get chicken and what do I find – EMPTY SHELVES. Not nearly empty but proper empty empty. Not one skinless, deboned chicken breast to be found. Meat counter – empty. Fish counter – empty. So no chicken for my family (but we have carrots).

Head over to the mince – no bulk packs (which I can somewhat tolerate since that’s normally on special) BUT only extra lean mince which is R20 more than the normal mince. So no mince for us.

By now I am suitable tense!

Promised the kids fruit loops – they didn’t have fruit loops – I suspect they go somewhere on the empty shelves down the cereal isle. Sorry kids none of that for you.

No herbs/spice mix I want – again obviously where the huge gapping hole was in the spice/herb isle. So our carrots will be all natural this month I am afraid – no seasoning for us.

Now in between all of this we all have to play “dodge the packers”. The shelf packers were all being dispatched into the store with trolleys full of items and had no regard for me and my pregnant self or the many elderly folk doing their shopping. I was nearly wiped out by 2 ladies pushing milk who clearly felt I was a nuisance and in the way.

I get to the check out to pay and let the cashier know I want to redeem my smart shopper points. She says “No problem just walk down to information and they will give you a piece of paper, bring that back to me and I will do it!”

I look at her in stunned silence and say “WHAT?”

She repeats it. So I say “Really? I must now walk half way across the store for a piece of paper?”

She smiles and nods her head.

I very politely say “Never mind”

She offers assistance “I will wait I don’t mind”

WHAT? REALLY? So again I politely reply “I am 36 weeks pregnant, I have just pushed this trolley around this store for. an hour and now you expect me to walk MORE? Please process my groceries so I can leave”

She laughs (yes she LAUGHS) and says “Next time ne”

I can honestly tell you now if I was not so scared of jail time I would have physically assaulted her.

WHY can’t you redeem your points by swiping your card like all the other places? I redeemed points at Dischem earlier in like 2 minutes. WHY must we walk to information? And where does it say this?

I was so mad. Maybe you are wondering why I didn’t call the manager? Well see I am 36 weeks pregnant, was mid hot flush, bursting for the loo, had just pushed a trolley with our months groceries around the rather LARGE Hyper and just wanted to go home. My mistake – I should have complained then and there!

The fact still remains it was a huge fail on Pick n Pays part. I can look past the smaller stores not having items but a hyper? Uh-huh. It’s not on.

What upsets me the most is that I have no where else to shop. Spar and Woolies are to expensive for the basics, my market doesn’t have groceries, Checkers are to me, all dirty. So that leaves PnP and I really do like their stuff. They have nice specials on, I can get everything I need in one go and I enjoy the experience (usually).

And PnP know this. They know I am stuck shopping there. They know they can have their tellers laugh at me and not offer assistance and tomorrow I will be back.

All I can say is Fuckers!

Oh wait I have one other thing to say. Don’t you find that Pick ‘n Pay stay ALWAYS get in your way? Even if they are just walking around the store, pushing a trolley or filling the shelves, they are always in the frikken way and they’d literally mow you down.

Instead of letting the customer, who is in the store spending money on their monopolized items, they still feel they have the “right of way” in the store.

Its bugs the crap outta me.

    I would’ve had my say….loudly!

Oy, and you can’t even have wine to relax when you get home! Hope they have the stuff next time

Flip , and I so love Pick n Pay. Wonder if they have a strike or such on hand. GO look at Checkers again – they have totally changed their stores and their media image. My hubby now likes to buy meat there – and he is super fussy about meat quality.

Cat – which Checkers does he go to. I can’t face Menlyn. There is a smaller one behind us in Garstfontein maybe I must try them!

Damaria – I can understand the smaller ones battling but a Hyper in an affluent neighbourhood? Not so sure.

Gosh. I hope their people read this blog, because your experience sounds like a nightmare and the fact that you are pregnant makes it worse. And I’ve had Pick’n Pay staff go pick up stuff I need if for some reason what I had was not appropriate ( e.g. they had a special on an item I was buyinh, I didn’t see the promo, cashier pointed it out when I paid and sent someone else to get the items for me while ringing my sale.) So that cashier should have known what to do to assist you. That’s not even going into the fact that they had some empty shelves.
BTW, I wonder if some of their franchises are struggling? There’s a Pick n’ Pay in Rustenburg in the suburb of Cashan which also drives me crazy. There are so many empty spots on their shelves and with my luck, it’s usually items I need.

Thumbs down! I won’t be back! Luckily I have more choices here where we stay!

That’s shocking Laura! Shew empty shelves and obnoxious tillers can send anyone on their way to have a nervous breakdown especially a heavily pregnant woman.

Is there anyway you can get the Managers email address and forward to him?

wow, I love that the P&P people put real responses on your blog. Something that drives me absolutely batty is when you get these standard responses that mean nothing. they actually make me MORE cross!

Snort. I would totally have smacked that cashier. Honestly, I think these people forget that we actually pay their salaries!

All I can say is, on my part, I am tired of complaining at the various Pick n Pay stores I have used. I get 1 call from head-office, the promise that matters will be dealt with and I will be updated yet they go silent afterwards and nothing improves. I have since boycotted some of their stores and now use Woolworths and Checkers as my first point of call and PNP when absolutely desperate. On a whole, the staff are lazy and disinterested, forgetting that WE, the patrons, pay your salaries. It’s no wonder your annual profits have declined and you are now looking to retrench. I rest my case.
