Every summer and every winter we complain about how hot and how cold it is. It is a little pointless because the seasons have been changing for thousands of years, so we know it is coming. It really does feel though that this year’s summer was particularly brutal.
We spend most December holidays with my folks in Montagu and it is hot there but this year it was unbearable and we spent a lot more time inside because it was simply too hot outside.
It is not particularly enjoyable being sweaty all the time but there a few things about summer that I love and to be honest, it is one of the reason I love living here.
One of the best things about summer is the fruit. I could quick easily become a fruitarian during the summer months and live off fruit salad. Summer fruits are as vibrant and full of life as the season is.
I love getting up early in the morning and during summer the sun comes up a earlier which means I get to enjoy it most mornings in calm.
Chilling around the pool. Is there a better activity for kids than swimming all day long?
I love the rain and there is something special about the summer rain, isn’t there.
No layers are needed in summer. In fact, if you are a child in South Africa, you very seldom need shoes during summer either. This makes going out so much easier, I don’t have to worry about making sure everyone has a jacket.
When you have kids there seems to be a never ending pile of laundry, in the summer you can hang a load up and it is dry in next to no time!
Summer is swimming season which means galas. They are long and often boring but I love watching Cameron swim.
Obviously summer is also all about holidays and family fun and Christmas presents and New Year celebrations.
Flip flops. I am not big on shoes but I have a rather large flip flop collection.
It is braai time. I am not the biggest braai fan but I do enjoy the social side of a braai and the best part is if we braai I don’t have to cook.
What do you love about summer?
